Getting there: Thailand has several international airports but the vast majority of travellers fly into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). There are direct flights from all the major hubs.
Capital city: Bangkok.
Population: 68.419 million.
Currency: Thai Baht (THB).
Climate: Thailand is generally hot and humid throughout the year.
Transport: A combination of buses, minivans, motorcycle taxis, săhm·lór (pedal rickshaws), túk-túks and sŏrng·tăa·ou (pick-up trucks). Only Bangkok has a light-rail transport system. There is an extensive inter-province metre-gauge railway system too.
Best time to travel: The cool season from November through February has more manageable temperatures and less rain, even if it is still hot to most visitors.
What to wear: How to dress depends on where one is. In the metropolitan areas conservative casual and smart casual attire is recommended but when visiting temples or mingling with hill tribes — cover up. Neat, clean clothing is considered respectful. Cope with the heat by wearing light, breathable natural fabrics.
