Latitude is high on creative energy and is a true platform of the arts. The event is devoted to showcasing an eclectic bill of performers, from filmmakers, musicians and poets to comics, dancers, actors and visual artists. Thought-provoking ideas are broadcasted, and organisers are intent on providing education of the arts for the varied crowds who attend each year. Aside from major name-dropping headliners on show at the main arenas, there are also opera performances on floating pontoons, discussions under the trees and DJs spinning vinyl in intimate fairy-lit corners.
Sure, there are name-dropping headliners who top the bill and pull the punters in, however one’s experience of Latitude always ends up being eventful and full of surprises. Note the flock of multi-coloured sheep (vegetable-dyed and PETA approved) munching grass in the entrance paddocks. This is a sure indication that what awaits within festival gates is about fun, laughter and plenty of grooving.
WORDS OF WISDOM
- Take to the lake. Yes, those gondolas bobbing about among the reeds are for hire and are waiting for someone to take them out on a mid-afternoon aqua paddle.
- Research the festival theme. It helps to create context with both art installations, films shown and the series of discussions which take place.
- 2016’s is ‘Love Thy Neighbour’. The focus is on breaking boundaries for the greater good, and what it means to have an understanding of others.
