With circling mountain ranges, clear lakes, fast-flowing rivers and vine-covered hills, Queenstown has the type of terrain and scenery that marathon runners love to compete in. Which makes it all the more surprising that the Southern city only recently held the first Queenstown International Marathon in 2014. The event was a grand success, and registrations for the event have grown ever since.
The course, comprising both full and half marathons as well as a shorter 10 kilometre leg and 2.2 kilometre kids run, takes in the Queenstown Lakes Regions, as participants plug out the distance on a mix of smooth, hard-pack trails and road running.
Post-race however, is when the fun truly begins. Rest weary limbs and book a private cedar hot tub at Onsen Hot Pools, play golf at Millbrook Resort, home of the BMW NZ Open, or venture into central Queenstown to eat, drink and peruse the lakeside shopping laneways.
