Hong Kong

  • Getting there: Fly into Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), a major airport hub in the region on direct flights from any continent. Take a ferry, or train in from China.
  • Capital city: Hong Kong.
  • Population: 7.356 million.
  • Religion: The majority follow the Chinese traditional religion which is a combination of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
  • Language: Both Chinese and English are official languages.
  • Currency: Hong Kong dollar (HKD).
  • Climate: A humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summer from June to August is hot, humid and sunny with occasional showers. Autumn from September to November is sunny with pleasant temperatures. Winter from December to February is cool with occasional cold fronts, dry and cloudy. Spring from March to May has warmer day temperatures and cool evenings. Typhoon season runs from May to November.
  • Transport: The very quick and efficient Mass Transit Railway (MTR) covers Hong Kong extensively and is also the quickest way to arrive into the CBD from the airport. Taxis and buses are plentiful and relatively cheap. Minibuses normally just run fixed routes. Ferries are available for the outlying islands. Sightsee from the top deck of historic double decker trams.
  • Best time to travel: Autumn through to early winter — September to December — when it is sunny with pleasant temperatures is the optimal time to travel there.
  • What to wear: Smart casual clothing and layering up for the cooler months will serve one well in this fashion conscious city.
