Belgium

  • Getting there: Brussels Airport (BRU) connects the country to several international airports both within and out of Europe.
  • Capital city: Brussels.
  • Population: 11.364 million.
  • Religion: Christian, predominantly Roman Catholic.
  • Language: Three official languages: Dutch, French and German.
  • Currency: Euro (EUR).
  • Climate: A temperate maritime climate with cool summers that can be rainy and humid, and mild winters. Being a small country there is little variation in climate apart from maritime influences being less, inland.
  • Transport: Belgium has an excellent and efficient public transport network, with an integrated train, tram, metro, and bus system.
  • Best time to travel: Peak tourist season is July and August, when the weather is at its finest, but Belgium is every bit as attractive during the shoulder months from mid-April to May and September to mid-October.
  • What to wear: As in most of Western Europe, there isn’t a dress code as such and anything smart casual in darker colours or black will help with blending in.
